A summary of useful information for those wishing to attend Alfriston School.

Information For Prospective Parents and Pupils

Alfriston School is a Local Authority designated Special School. Our admissions are determined by the Local Authority. Pupils are admitted to the school via the Special Schools Admissions Panel. For information about the process and procedure, please look at Buckinghamshire County Council Local Offer.

The school does not take any direct admissions, however if you think Alfriston might be the right placement for your daughter and you would like to find out more, then please contact the school office to arrange a visit. We would be delighted to see you.

We have regular open days for SENCOs, teachers and support staff from our feeder primary schools - so staff at your daughter’s primary school may be able to advise you in the first instance.

Every July we take part in the county-wide New Pupils Day and enjoy welcoming our prospective Year 7s to Alfriston for an informal day of activities. Sometimes pupils join us later in their school careers and again we welcome visits from pupils, their parents and their teachers. We always want the transition to Alfriston to be a happy experience for the girls and will do what we can to integrate new pupils successfully and smoothly.

Transition From Primary

The school has a rigorous system for the induction of new pupils, ensuring a smooth transition from the primary sector. Initially, parents are invited to visit the school prior to their daughter’s transition review, returning with their daughter before a place is offered.

Pupils come to Alfriston from mainstream and special primary schools across Buckinghamshire and surrounding counties. The SENCo liaises closely with feeder school staff in order to collate information around the pupil’s ability and needs. Pupils are invited to visit Alfriston several times during Year 6 in order to become more familiar with the school.

New Pupils' Day

New Pupils' Day in July allows girls to experience a range of activities with their peers and to meet members of staff. Following pupils' entry to Alfriston in the Autumn term, an extensive induction programme is presented through the pastoral system, PSHE lessons and a personal Transition Skills programme delivered by our Speech and Language team.

During the Spring term, pupils have the opportunity to invite staff from their previous schools to visit Alfriston for an informal meeting and tea. This enables girls to demonstrate their new skills, independence and confidence whilst showing their visitors around the school as tour guides!
